To cheer me further, the Dragon Queen explained, "Although nearly getting your face attacked did send you into my arms for a moment, there is another benefit for you."

I frowned at her.

"You command the Face Attackers now," she went on. "I thought you should know what it feels like."

Court of the Dragon Queen - Part 13

The Dragon Queen asked, "What if I told you the Face Attacker would never have been allowed to frighten you if I had not been here to watch over you the whole time. Would you still be this upset?"

I stared at her for a while and then said, "Probably."

Court of the Dragon Queen - Part 12

"You must be tired," the Dragon Queen said as she led me down a dark corridor and opened a heavy wooden door. "This is your goblin squalor. You can rest in here and put away your things."

As she ushered me through the door, whatever was sleeping inside woke up and charged at my face, snarling.

It stopped when it saw my cloak and rolled onto its side in submission. But I was frightened and ran to her for protection.

"There, there," she soothed. "I'm sure no one meant to leave that in your room. But now that it's happened, we will hold you and comfort you in our arms until you feel better."

At that moment, out of the corner of my eye, I saw her wink at everyone else, as if to say, "Well done."

Court of the Dragon Queen - Part 11

"Why should I even lead your creepy goblins?" I pouted as the Dragon Queen placed a heavy gouged halfhelm on my head. "What's this," I sniped. "The magic helmet of something something?"

"This is Goblin Iron," she answered. "Why do you think I want you in my Goblin army? Because only Goblin soldiers get Goblin Iron. Where I'm sending you, I need you protected by something stronger than magic."

"This should make you feel better," the Dragon Queen smiled as she placed a soft blanket around my shoulders. "This will protect you from any goblin, blight, ghost, or skeleton that gets closer to you than you are comfortable."
"Hey, this is my bedspread from home. How do you know for sure it can protect from all that."
"Ohhh, we just know."

Court of the Dragon Queen - Part 9

"What is the good of a magical realm if I can't meet those unicorns?" I pouted.
"My realm is light and shadow," the Dragon Queen explained. "Every being here loves to be near you, but some allow others to stay closest to you, because those need you more."

Court of the Dragon Queen - Part 8

"I don't want to lead your goblin army," I told the Dragon Queen. "So now can I go meet the unicorns?"
"You won't be able to get too near," she said, patting my hand. "They think you've already accepted the commission."
"Why do they think that?" I asked.
"Because you are wearing the Mailcoat of Light. Only a goblin General receives such wargear from my armory."

As I watched the shimmering unicorns play, I asked the Dragon Queen, "Do you think they would come over here and meet me?"
"They would," she replied. "If you weren't surrounded by my goblins."
